Gerald, Jerry, Waterworth, soon to turn 90 years old, is a popular and friendly Delta artist who resides on his ranch between Locke and Courtland. Five or six of Jerry's friends and family members are pooling their efforts to throw him a well-deserved huge birthday celebration at the Jean Harvie Center in Walnut Grove on Saturday, October 13th in the late afternoon through early evening and invitations have been sent to 250 of Jerry's closest friends. |

Coincidentally, his birthday celebration falls on Second Saturday, which is when new artworks are generally introduced in the Locke art galleries, so we thought it would be the perfect weekend to host an opening for a show of Jerry's works. Upon my request to Jerry that we focus on a display of a couple dozen or so of his best figure sketches mostly drawn in different figure drawing classes he took at three Sacramento area colleges in as many decades ago, Jerry generously agreed and allowed me to go through stacks of large, aged newsprint sketch pads in his downstairs artist studio of his home and pick and choose my favorites. While I carefully turned the brittle pages of his large sketchpads, filled with beautifully sensitive charcoal figure sketches and a few finished drawings, Jerry went to the other side of his crowded studio and searched for a small wooden cigar box. When he found it, he handed it to me and I opened it, finding a treasure trove of his delicately penciled, small figure sketches and portraits he drew back in the 1950's and 1960's. What little gems they are! We will have some of them on display as well. |

Jerry will be on hand to meet the public only for about an hour at Artworks In Progress Gallery & Studio in Locke from 1 - 2 pm on Saturday, October 13th. And Jerry will return the following day, Sunday the 14th from 3 - 4 pm. But don't come expecting to invest in any of Jerry's beautiful artworks because he refuses to sell them, not even for big money, says he doesn't need the money. And seldom will part with them. Those few he does part with, he is very particular about where they end up. A few, lucky old friends (myself happily included) have been able to acquire a few pieces of Jerry's he's allowed to leave his collection. Before he allows any of his artworks to escape his studio or home: (1) he must like you, a lot, (2) you must convince him that you really love the piece (3) you must agree to not leave the country (or even the state) with it, in some cases, maybe not even Sacramento County. |
The October 13th and 14th Art Exhibition Opening for Jerry Waterworth's Figure Sketches was a great success. Some 200 people came through to see Jerry's works. |
Showing continues through the end of October on Saturdays and Sundays 1 - 4 p.m. or other times/days by appointment. (916) 775-4710 |
